The GGSSA stands to meet the socio-economic rights of it’s members. It ensures a member has full freedom of Association, Self-Organisation and designate a representative of their own choosing to negotiate the terms and conditions of their employment. It is the natural right of those who labour to fully partake in the benefits of their labour.

History of Association

The Ghana Gas Senior Staff Association is the only unionized body authorized by the Labour Department to represent employees’ (members span from Officers to Managers) interest in Ghana National Gas Company Limited (GNGLC); then Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC). The story began in 2015 as a union under the GTPCWU (General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers’ Union) of TUC (Trade Union Congress), Ghana but we eventually broke away and metamorphosized to become an Enterprise-Based Association in 2018. It received its Certificate of Incorporation and Certificate to Commence Business 7th February 2019 by 19th March 2019 the Association received its full certification as a Trade Union, its name became the Ghana Gas Senior Staff Association (GGSSA). The Association has acquired the Collective Bargaining Certificate to negotiate on behalf of the aforementioned employees’ ranks in 2020.  It has since worked assiduously to promote employees’ welfare through prudent negotiations with the Management of GNGLC which is its founding and originating purpose. The Interim Executives of the Ghana Gas Local Union were:

  1. Richmond Kabiru Alamu - Chairman, GTPCWU – Ghanagas Branch.
  2. Mieza-Mea Alleah - Vice Chairman, GTPCWU – Ghanagas Branch.
  3. Sumaila Braimah Mahama - General Secretary, GTPCWU – Ghanagas Branch.
  4. Samuel Ekuban Amankwandoh - Deputy General Secretary, GTPCWU – Ghanagas Branch.
  5. Abdul Mubarak Dutie Tuhson – Treasurer, GTPCWU – Ghanagas Branch.

The GGSSA has uniquely attained many milestones over the years; firstly, it adopted its working Constitution 29th January 2018 during its 6th General Assembly meeting. It then moved to have its first Executive Council election in October 2019 with the Elected Officers being;

  1. The Chairman was Mr. Richmond Kabiru Alamu.
  2. The General Secretary was Mr. Samuel Ekuban Amankwandoh.
  3. The Deputy General Secretary was Mr. Maxwell Yeboah Debrah.
  4. The Treasurer was Mr. John Bates Blankson.
  5. The Vice-Chairman was Mr. Abdul Mubarak Dutie Tuhson subsequently resigned and was succeeded by Harrison Seth Kwablah Ayim after a successful by-election was held.

The maiden edition of the GGSSA Week Celebration was carried out on the 19th – 22nd of July 2022 meant to strengthen unity among members of the Association while introducing the Association to the broader public. The Executive Council through members procured COVID-19 items worth GHC 15,500.00 to Eikwe Government Hospital. Items were presented in June 2020. The Association through the Executive Council and the Welfare Committee has a well-established Welfare model to guide all welfare issues of the Association. The Executive Council and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Committee immensely supported the office of the General Manager – Human Resources (Ghana Gas) to get the final Human Resource Policy approved. This gives way to the approval of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which takes its references from the HR Policy. An Association can be strong only if its members are, that being said the GGSSA has been able to grow its memberships from a mere few Staff who were the founders to about 677 members over the past 8 years which has been its long-term goal.

One of the key moments in the History of the GGSSA was during the MONTIE Demonstration of 26th August 2016, where members of the then Ghana Gas Local Union rallied behind our then Executives to voice out the poor working conditions of staff. This peaceful strike action led to the suspension of many staff who were directly involved in this action although all necessary parties were adequately informed before the demonstration. This brave action led to a change in the working conditions of the entire staff of the GNGLC.

The GGSSA has since then had its second peaceful and successful election for Executive Council with its set of Governing Board Representatives and Committees made up solely of Association members. Just as in any organization challenges are inevitable, the GGSSA has had its share of these challenges but our hard-working Executives and cherished members together with the help of the GGSSA Governing Bodies have helped to steer the Association on the right path. Its membership spans from employees within the salary brackets of S1 to S6, that is Officers to Managers. The Ghana Gas Senior Staff Association has subsequently received its collective bargaining Certificate (CBC) from the Labour Department and it is on course to have its Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Management of GNGLC (Ghana National Gas Limited Company). Through the Management of GNGLC and the GGSSA, the company became fully indigenized in 2017 and saved the company millions of dollars. This achievement is worth commending and replicating across all other sectors of the economy to promote the “can-do” spirit of the local Ghanaian brain.

The Association has cooperation with the company along its three Pillars of Growth: Business Development, Capacity Building, and Community Development making GNGLC a World Class Midstream Company. Through the effective collaboration between the Management and the Association, other internal policies including the HR Policy, the Welfare and Health policies have been revised. These have among other programs, culminated in promoting a healthy relationship between the management and the staff Association that enhances the well-being of the staff in a productive work environment.

Ghana Gas staff, apart from working tirelessly and delivering to effectively help curtail the ‘dumsor’ situation, also helped to save the Government of Ghana's harsh invoice balances from the importation of light crude oil for power production and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) for domestic usage. Going forward, the Association anticipates growth decisions and interventions targeted at bolstering the business for which the youthful staff have toiled from its difficult circumstances at the inception stage of the company to its current state.
